German club Mainz are currently monitoring Arsenal winger Serge Gnabry, who has struggled for game time at Emirates. The Bundesliga side are interested in offering a loan deal for the exciting midfielder, according reports by Express.
Gnabry is set to re-join the Arsenal squad after a successful campaign with Germany at the Rio Olympics. The 21-year-old scored six goals in five games for his national side and earned a silver medal after a defeat to Brazil in the final.
Mainz, who are currently dealing with injury crisis, is impressed by the youngster’s performance and are keen on bringing him to Bundesliga.
According to German newspaper Allgemeine-Zeitung, Mainz has both their wingers, Jhon Cordoba, and Jairo Samperio, side-lined due to injury. This is said to force the club’s management to turn their attention to the transfer market for necessary reinforcements.
While Arsene Wenger is forced to spend before deadline day, his main concern might lie in keeping his existing squad at the Emirates Stadium. The 66 year old had expressed his desire to offer Gnabry a contract extension last week.
“I want to keep Serge Gnabry and extend his contract,” said Wenger. “I think we stood by him. He went to West Brom, didn’t play, we had to rebuild his confidence. I allowed him to go to the Olympics to help Germany.
“I think he’s here now for a long time.”
Arsenal’s Joel Campbell departed the club to join Sporting Lisbon on a season-long loan and Wenger might prevent Gnabry following suit.
Gnabry made nine Premier League appearances in the 2013/14, but then missed the following season due to injuries. He was sent to West Bromwich Albion on loan last season where he managed to make only a single appearance under Tony Pulis. He spent the rest of the season playing for Gunners under-21s after returning to the club in January.
After a very impressive run at the Olympics, Wenger may include him in the first-team set-up this season.
