Arsenal have made an enquiry for Italian international Davide Astori, according to reports in Italy. The centre back plays for Fiorentina but it is unclear how likely this deal is to being completed (via The Daily Star).
Arsenal’s dire need for a centre back is certainly no secret. With 20-year-old Rob Holding now effectively the second best available central defender at the club, Arsenal need reinforcements in that position and fast. Shkodran Mustafi was expected to be that man but fresh reports claim that Arsene Wenger is being priced out of a deal for the German international.
Step forward Davide Astori. The 29-year-old is an Italian international with 11 caps to his name. He only joined Fiorentina last summer in a season long loan move from Cagliari which has since been made permanent but is now being linked with a move to the Emirates.
Italian outlet Gazzamercato has claimed that Arsene Wenger has made an enquiry for Astori who turns 30 in January. The former AC Milan youngster hasn’t played club football outside of his native Italy so these links to the Gunners are a little surprising.
It’s unclear how much truth is in the link with Astori, who took to the field for Fiorentina during their 2-1 defeat to Juventus last weekend. However it does seem unlikely that Wenger will make a move for a player who is only a couple of years younger than Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker.
