The Daily Mirror claims that Wenger is pursuing other targets after being quoted a price of £50 million for Shkodran Mustafi. The defender’s club Valencia are in dire need of cash and the paper claims they are looking for a joint-world record fee for a defender (via The Mirror).
It’s a deal which seems to have been close to completion for months but Arsenal’s pursuit of Shkodran Mustafi has taken a new turn today. The Mirror claims that his club Valencia want a fee of £50 million for the German international from the Gunners. The Spanish club are in dire financial worries and need to sell in order to comply with UEFA Financial Fair Play regulations.
The Mirror reports that there is another reason behind the sudden increase in the price. The article claims that Valencia want the extra money in order to make their own move for Chelsea winger Pedro. The Spaniard has hardly set the world alight at Stamford Bridge during his year in England and has been linked with a return to La Liga.
Regarding Mustafi, The Mirror reports that Wenger has walked away from the deal because of the £50 million price but that any possible transfer could still be worked out. Arsenal’s Dick Law is in Spain to try and broker a deal but not at the price which Arsenal have reportedly been quoted.
It’s unclear whether this deal will actually go ahead but Arsenal really need it to. The defensive crisis at the Emirates has seriously affected the start of the season and it was obvious how much better off the side was with a top quality centre back in the team on Saturday. Laurent Koscielny’s performance was outstanding and showed the importance of having quality defenders.
