Arsenal veteran Mathieu Flamini is set to leave the Emirates at the end of the season, with his current contract expiring and Arsene Wenger not planning on giving him an extension, as reported by Goal.

The report suggests the 32-year-old has already been offered to a number of clubs across Europe, with Greek side Panathinaikos the latest to offered the chance to sign him.

Many balked at Wenger’s decision to bring Flamini back for a second spell at the club, with the French midfielder seemingly well past his best. He proved to be an excellent free signing initially though, and you really can’t fault Wenger for bringing him back to the club.

He’s since gone drastically down hill though, with his age seemingly catching up with him. He’s been a step or two off the pace for quite a while now, and it’s always a concern when he takes to the pitch.

The former AC Milan midfielder has certainly contributed during his second spell, playing a huge role in a number of games. He’s just not good enough to play for Arsenal any more though, and with competition in midfield from Francis Coquelin, Mohamed Elneny, Santi Cazorla, Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey, and potentially a new signing or two this summer, it’s hard to see him ever getting any game time.

He’s still no doubt able to do a job for a somewhat smaller team though, and one of the many clubs he’s allegedly being offered to this summer will surely snap him up on a free transfer.
