Arsenal failed with deadline day bid for £22m rated striker

Our failure to sign a striker before the close of the window has resulted in outrage from fans, but it seems we were closer to signing someone than we thought. We apparently saw a deadline day bid for Juventus’ Simone Zaza rebuffed, and failed to return with a bid matching the Serie A side’s valuation before the window slammed shut, according to talkSPORT.

The 24-year-old’s situation has been complicated in the past by dual ownership, but with Juventus buying him outright from Sassuolo this past summer for a reported £12.75m (via Sky Sports) things are now a little simpler.

It’s unclear how much we bid for the Italian international, but it clearly didn’t match Juventus’ £22m valuation (via talkSPORT). Arsene Wenger clearly didn’t feel the Serie A star was worth that much, and opted to continue the season with the striking options – or lack thereof – we currently have.

The reason for the rejection was largely down to the Scudetto holders’ inability to find a replacement at such a late stage (via talkSPORT), but you have to assume that at the right price they would have sold.

Wether Zaza would have been the player we need is questionable, as he certainly isn’t the world class talent Wenger has seemingly been looking for – with Karim Benzema and Edinson Cavani among those being touted (via ESPN). But he surely would have been better than nothing, as with Olivier Giroud currently our only out and out striker, we are badly in need of reinforcements up front.
