Reports in France indicate that Arsenal are keen on signing winger Rachid Ghezzal in a free transfer this summer. The Lyon man is out of contract at the club but Arsenal would face stiff competition for his services (via Sport Witness).
The start of January saw not only the start of the transfer window but also the start of the summer’s free transfers. As of 1 January, players can officially start negotiating with other clubs over free transfers if their contracts expire in the summer.
One such player is Lyon’s Rachid Ghezzal. The Algerian is 24 years old and burst onto the scene in Ligue 1 last season. After spending much time in the shadows of players like Alexandre Lacazette and Nabil Fekir, Ghezzal broke out and grabbed eight goals and eight assists in 29 Ligue 1 matches.
This has attracted much attention. Ghezzal was a target for Everton during the summer but reportedly turned down the chance to join the Toffees. Ronald Koeman is still reportedly interested the player but so, it seems, is Arsene Wenger.
The Gunners boss will face some stiff competition for the player. FootMercato reports that along with Arsenal and Everton, Atletico Madrid, Valencia and AC Milan are all vying for the winger’s signature.
One thing which should be noted with this story is the winger’s current contract. Ghezzal is reportedly on just £8,700 per week which for a first-team player at a club like Lyon, is next to nothing.
It’s unclear how concrete these links are but considering how many wingers Arsenal currently have at the club, you’d expect one would have to leave before another arrived. However, Rachid Ghezzal does seem like an interesting prospect and considering his relatively low salary, any transfer is an interesting prospect.
