Mertesacker injury

Reports indicate that Arsenal are set to send Per Mertesacker out on loan in an attempt to prove the centre-back’s fitness. The German has just six months left on his current contract and the club are eager to see the 32-year-old in action before offering him a new deal (via The Times).

It’s rare to see rumours of a club sending their captain out on loan but that is exactly what Arsenal are reportedly looking to do. The Times reports that the Gunners are willing to let Per Mertesacker leave the Emirates on a short-term deal in an attempt to prove his fitness.

Mertesacker has only just returned from a knee injury which has seen him miss the entire season. The World Cup winner is now behind Laurent Koscielny and compatriot Shkodran Mustafi in the pecking order and will need to prove his fitness if he is to remain at the club.

Mertesacker’s current contract expires at the end of the season and with little indication that he will be offered a new deal, he could be on his way out.

After the injury problems suffered by Mikel Arteta last season and Per Mertesacker this term, Arsenal haven’t had much luck with their club captains. In fact, the official Arsenal club captain hasn’t started a Premier League match since November 2014. That doesn’t show any signs of changing soon and this news just further proves that.
