Harry Redknapp has encouraged Arsenal to make a move for Christian Benteke before the transfer deadline. The former Tottenham manager thinks The Gunners should consider bidding for the Liverpool striker who is close to a move to Crystal Palace.
According to 90min, an estimated £27 million deal has been agreed between the two clubs for the Belgium international and a medical is due within the next 24 hours.
Speaking about the transfer market in his column in the London Evening Standard, Redknapp thinks the 25-year-old is a decent choice considering his price tag. While he supports Palace’s move for the striker, the 69-year-old has also tipped Arsenal to make a bid.
He wrote, ‘They [Crystal Palace] do need a centre-forward and they need to push the boat out to get Christian Benteke.’
‘If I was at Arsenal, I’d consider it too. Benteke looked fantastic at Aston Villa but his confidence is on the floor after being dragged on and off at Liverpool. He needs a manager to build him up again, make him the main man and get him the service he needs.’
Redknapp also shared his thoughts on Romelu Lukaku who he thinks isn’t worth his valued market price.
‘I don’t see Romelu Lukaku worth £60m and Benteke at £30m: if we are talking value, I’d have Benteke all day long. Palace need to get that deal done.’
The Gunners are yet to spend on a first team striker, and stealing Benteke from Crystal Palace doesn’t seem like the worst idea. His speed and strength can give Wenger more tactical freedom upfront and ease the pressure off of Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud.
In the 2015/16 season, Benteke started only 14 of the 29 appearances he made for Liverpool, scoring 9 goals. He has been out of favour at Anfield since the appointment Jurgen Klopp took charge in October and the former Aston Villa striker might prefer playing for Arsene Wenger than Alan Pardew.
Arsenal are certainly closer to signing a defender with a number of names linked heavily with a move to the club but there is still no definite news of Wenger bringing in a striker before the window shuts.
