Arsenal have suffered another blow in the summer transfer window with Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette ruling out any potential move to the Emirates Stadium. The French forward had long been linked with a move to the Gunners but now it seems like a deal is off the table.
After failing to land Jamie Vardy and Gonzalo Higuain, speculation grew that Arsene Wenger had turned his attention to Ligue 1 in his search for a new striker. Alexandre Lacazette was at the top of the list, however the player has dashed any hopes of a transfer after insisting he will remain with Les Gones.
“Concerning my personal situation, I do not think there will be a departure from Lyon.” The 25-year-old told The Metro after scoring both goals in a 2-0 win over Caen. “Everything is going well here. I would like to pass the bar of 100 goals in all competitions. I would like to do that at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais.”
This is the most recent of several disappoints in Arsenal’s transfer activities over the summer. Riyad Mahrez’s name was recently crossed off the list when the Algerian signed a new deal with Leicester; now Lacazette also looks set to snub Wenger’s call. Furthermore, the Shkodran Mustafi deal seems to have stalled, making anxious fans even more nervous.
Fortunately for The Gunners, Olivier Giroud is only suffering a lack of match fitness and could therefore return to the starting lineup soon. Le Prof also revealed that Danny Welbeck is three months ahead of schedule on his road to recovery.
A new forward is needed but for the next couple of matches Wenger will have to make do with what is already at his disposal. Alexis Sanchez was deployed as the lone striker against Liverpool, but that decision reaped little to no benefit. However, partner him with Giroud and the two could flourish.
Lacazette’s decision may add insult to injury for Arsenal supporters, but it won’t prove as fatal as some like to think.
