New RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita revealed he discussed a potential move to north London with Arsene Wenger, however opted for a move to the Bundesliga after a growing reputation with RB Salzburg (via ESPN FC)
The £14million 21-year-old had attracted interest from a host of Premier League clubs, however it appears Wenger made the most drastic attempt to secure the exciting Guinea international.
Despite the Gunners boss attempts, Keita cited Leipzig sporting director Ralf Rangnick as the reason he decided to forgo a move to the Premier League.
“I had contact with Arsene Wenger, who spoke French to me,” Keita said according to ESPN.
“But Ralf has treated me like a son. He came to France in 2014 to sign me for Salzburg and I trust him entirely.
“I joined RB because it is an exciting club with great potential. I didn’t want to move to a big Champions League club immediately. It’s still too early.”
It seemed Wenger had his eye on yet another young signing, considering our wealth in midfield it’s an odd one especially with a number of promising stars coming through the ranks in that position.
Perhaps Wenger is losing the lure he once has enjoyed when plucking young, exciting talent from nowhere. Or perhaps this is just part and partial of having a very strong midfield that allows little room for youngsters to break through.
