We’ve recently been credited with an interest in Leicester City’s young defender Ben Chilwell, but the Foxes insist we must up our bid to £5m if we want to lure him away from the King Power Stadium this January, as reported by the Daily Mail.
The teenage left-back looks to have a bright future ahead of him, and Arsene Wenger is apparently keeping tabs on him. The report suggests we’ve already had a £3m bid rebuffed, but Leicester claim a new £5m bid would see the deal done.
We currently have Nacho Monreal and Kieran Gibbs as our options at left-back, but Wenger seems to be once again looking to the future. Monreal may have recently signed a contract extension (via Arsenal.com), but he isn’t as young as he once was, and may not have too many years left at the top level. Gibbs on the other hand, while having time on his side, has struggled to wrestle a starting spot away from the Spaniard.
We would have liked to have seen more improvement from Gibbs over the last few years, but it just hasn’t come. Injuries have obviously hampered him, but he still doesn’t look like becoming the top class left-back we need. Chilwell is young enough that he may not demand regular first-team football just yet, but he could end up being the long-term replacement to Monreal.

It’s hard to see the 19-year-old making an immediate impact, but he could still prove an excellent signing. He would bolster the British Core at the club too, which has taken a bit of a hit due to injuries.
He’s currently on just £800 per week, and despite his age, that is a tiny sum for a player currently plying his trade with the team top of the Premier League. Chilwell has obviously been out on loan this season rather than playing regularly for Leicester, but it’s still a minuscule contract. His wages, the chance to work under Arsene Wenger, and the opportunity to play for Arsenal may well make a switch to north London difficult to turn down, but will the manager be willing to stump up the £5m?
