Arsene Wenger is apparently keen on making his second signing of the January transfer window, and is hoping to beat Chelsea to the signing of struggling Real Madrid defender Nacho, according to Goal.
The report suggests we’re looking to lure the Spaniard away from the Santiago Bernabeu this winter, with a €10m fee being touted. We’re competing with Guus Hiddink and Chelsea for his signature though, so will need to move fast.
Nacho is apparently unhappy at Real Madrid, with his game time severely limited with the La Liga giants. Despite the fact the 26-year-old can play in a number of positions, playing for Real Madrid means there are quality players ahead of him in every single one.
That versatility – which sees him slot in at left-back, right-back, or centre-back – will also make him incredibly appealing to Arsene Wenger though, who is known for admiring versatility in players.
Despite struggling to get into Real Madrid’s Galacticos, Nacho is still a quality defender. He would start for a huge number of top tier teams, and would arguably make an excellent addition to any squad in the world.
It makes sense that he’s being monitored by a number of top clubs, with Goal suggesting Roma and Napoli have joined Arsenal and Chelsea in the hunt for his signature.
The report unfortunately originates from Spanish outlet Fichajes, who are notoriously unreliable when it comes to transfer rumours. It would be great if we were to sign Nacho this January, but due to the source we need to take this rumour with a pinch of salt.

The price, the nature of the player, and the idea that he may be unhappy with his current lot in the Spanish capital certainly means this one would make sense, but until we hear something a little more tangible this one goes in the ‘never going to happen’ pile for us.
