The close of the window is drawing closer, and it’s looking less and less likely that Arsenal will make a signing. We have been linked with late moves for Paris Saint-Germain pair Edinson Cavani and Adrien Rabiot (via the Daily Mail), and Arsene Wenger needs to do everything he can to bring these two in – not just for the sake of Arsenal’s future, but for his own as well.
Our performances so far this season have shown that we aren’t quite ready to challenge consistently for the title, but this isn’t news to most Arsenal fans. We’ve been lacking a couple of truly top class players for a number of years, but it was thought this would change now we’re out of the financial mire that dragged us down for so long.
Despite claims that money is not an issue (via the Daily Mail), Arsene Wenger has still failed to sign an outfield player this summer – with Petr Cech our solitary acquisition so far.
If this continues and we don’t see a signing before 6pm on transfer deadline day, then Wenger may have some serious problems on his hands.
Not only will we yet again be left struggling to compete with the free spending clubs ahead of us like Manchester United and Manchester City, but fans are likely to be up in arms.
Arsenal supporters have been split into two camps for a number of years – the Wenger Out Brigade and the Arsene Knows Best movement. The numbers swayed and tilted – both in favour of and against the Frenchman – during periods of success and times of hardship, with the manager really splitting opinion at the club.
Many AKBs seemed convinced things would change once we had resolved our financial issues, and that Wenger was the right man to lead us forward. He has continued in the same vein though – exceptions being Mesut Özil and Alexis Sanchez – and things are looking bleak for the boss once again.
Cavani and Rabiot now look to be the only players we (almost) realistically have a chance of signing – with a rather unlikely move for Zlatan Ibrahimovic also being touted (via the Evening Standard) – and if Wenger doesn’t bring them in he could be finished at Arsenal.
Most Gooners are realistic in our ambitions, and know that we aren’t necessarily going to win the league or challenge Europe’s elite in the Champions League every year. What we want is to be competitive though, and at least make the effort to compete where possible.
A lack of signings this summer will show a real lack of ambition, and whether it’s down to Wenger or the board, the manager will be held largely responsible.

With other teams around us strengthening as usual, we are running the risk of falling further behind. Scraping another fourth placed finish – or even worse, dropping out of the Champions League spots – would be unacceptable at this point, and Wenger’s approval rating is likely to plummet come 6:01 pm.
It would be a huge shame if the 65-year-old were to leave the club under a negative cloud, but he is certainly at risk of doing just that. Wenger needs to make a signing or two not only to help us challenge, but to appease the fans as well. Hopefully he doesn’t damage his legacy at the club with his frugal nature, and he uses the remaining time to bring a new face or two to the Emirates.
