Olivier Giroud has explained why he opted to remain at Arsenal this season, after he was tipped to leave the club this summer.
The forward was targeted by Marseille, Everton and West Ham, and Arsene Wenger has admitted he could have left.
However, Giroud has now revealed why he could not depart, despite seeing competition for places increase following the arrival of Alexandre Lacazette.
“There was something in my soul and in my heart which told me to stay,” Giroud said via The Mirror.
“I’ve been hesitating because I’m the most happy man when I play and I am on the pitch.
“But I keep the faith and I still believe I can have an important part to play this season in the club and I feel good in my head and also physically.
“So I am 100 per cent focused on the club project. I’ve been through five amazing years here so I felt like the story had to continue.”
Giroud came off the bench to score the winner against Leicester on Friday night, and he admitted it was a special moment.
“There are nice days to come from me in an Arsenal shirt,” he added.
“Good competition is always good for the team – it forces you to always give your best.”
Giroud proved once again on Friday what a crucial member of the squad he is, and it’s a huge boost that he will remain at the club.
