Wenger To Stay After Agreeing To Accept Major Changes

Arsene Wenger is set to stay as Arsenal manager for another two years after agreeing to accept changes to the way the club operates off the field, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Wenger has been vehemently opposed to the notion of the club bringing in a director of football but there is now a possibility that someone could be brought in in some kind of sporting director role.

The Gunners boss has reportedly been told that the new position will not interfere with his work with the first-team, team selection or coaching but would focus more on scouting, the youth department, analytics and logistics.

Wenger revealed in his press conference on Friday that he was scheduled for talks over his future with the club after the FA Cup final, with it now looking virtually certain he will remain in charge.

“There are many aspects of a football club which have to be discussed at a board meeting,” he said. “One of them is of course what is happening with the manager, the future, the players who have to come in, the renewal of contracts. You don’t miss problems in a board meeting.”

The Frenchman also appears to have softened his stance when it comes to the prospect of having a director of football at the club.

“Director of football – when I say that – is a guy who makes the decisions that normally are down to the manager,” he said. “That means selection of players, buying and all matters that concern the functioning of the team on a daily basis.

“Of course we can need help to become better. I am always open to open that. I am always open to things that improve the quality and the future of the club. After that, you have to see if it’s really efficient because the titles do not always make you better.”

It looks as though there will certainly be changes at the club this summer, although one thing that does not look set to change is the manager.
