Barcelona have reportedly made contact with Mesut Ozil’s agents to express an interest in signing the Arsenal star this summer, according to Spanish newspaper Sport.
The report claims the Catalan giants have informed the Germany international they would like to bring him to Camp Nou if he cannot agree a new deal with the Gunners.
Ozil is into the final 18 months of his contract at the club and yet to agree a new deal and has previously admitted he will only stay if Arsene Wenger does.
The Arsenal boss was quick to downplay those comments but like Ozil and Alexis Sanchez, is yet to commit his future to the club.
The report also states that Ozil would be happy to leave Arsenal and finish his career in Spain with Luis Enrique’s side.
Ozil has previously insisted he is happy at the club although contract negotiations are believed to have slowed due to the World Cup winner’s wage demands.
Wenger has repeatedly insisted he is confident Ozil and Sanchez will both stay although there must be a growing concern with little progress seemingly made in agreeing new deals.
Whether Barcelona would be able to afford to sign Ozil and pay him a larger salary is also a topic for debate.
The Catalan giants have a huge wage bill and have recently renewed contracts with Neymar, Luis Suarez and Sergio Busquets.
Barcelona still also need to extend Lionel Messi’s contract, which is expected to make him the highest paid player in European football and could leave little budget left for Ozil.
