Arsene Wenger has explained why he doesn’t want to sign Dimitri Payet, saying he has a lot of players in the Frenchman’s position. The Gunners were linked with a move for the midfielder who declared his intention to leave West Ham this transfer window.
Arsene Wenger didn’t wait long to comment on the rumours linking Arsenal with a move for Dimitri Payet. The reports of Wenger’s interest in the player only came about yesterday but the Frenchman has already put them to bed.
“I don’t need Payet,” Wenger explained. “We have so many experienced players. I rate Payet as a player but it’s not an area where we look.
“No, we have many offensive players who can play in this position. You’re interested in the quality of the player but we have no need in this domain.”
Payet enjoyed an excellent season for West Ham last year. It was a breakout term for the midfielder in the Premier League, bursting onto the scene in English football with 15 goals and 17 assists in all competitions. He then went on to star for France in the European Championships that summer.
While he hasn’t yet hit those heights this season, the Frenchman is still undoubtedly a quality player. When he announced his intention to leave West Ham, there was no shortage of suitors. but it seems that Arsenal are not one of them.
It’s not really a surprise that Wenger has dismissed Arsenal’s interest in Dimitri Payet. As the Frenchman said, the Gunners have a number of players who can play in a similar position. Payet would be a luxury signing and one which Arsenal shouldn’t really make as they look to challenge for the title during the remainder of the season.
