Bayer Leverkusen’s Hakan Calhanoglu has been touted as ‘the new Mesut Özil’, and we are apparently hoping to beat the likes of Manchester United and Barcelona to his signature, according to talkSPORT.
Calhanoglu’s Turkish roots and creativity have seen him likened to Özil, but the 21-year-old is unquestionably his own player. He excels in a number of areas, and has regularly been both Leverkusen and Turkey’s best player.
The Bundesliga star’s best attribute is his specialty from the dead ball situation, and his free-kicks are a sight to behold. He’s become so proficient at set-pieces that you actually expect him to score rather than miss, something we could badly do with at Arsenal.
We get a lot of free-kicks due to our tendency to frustrate opponents and force them to impose themselves on us physically. The reason teams seem to have no problems giving away free-kicks against us though, is because we rarely do anything with them. Despite the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Özil, and Santi Cazorla in the side, set-pieces are often wasted.
Calhanoglu would certainly go a long way towards remedying that, and he’s a real goal threat from open play as well.
