Roma are keen to sign Wojciech Szczesny permanently after being impressed by the Arsenal goalkeeper during his loan spell, according to the Corriere Dello Sport.
Szczesny is currently enjoying a second season with the Italian side who are flying high in the Serie A table, in second place behind leaders Juventus.
The 26-year-old initially joined Roma on a one-year deal in 2015 to gain regular football following the arrival of Petr Cech from Chelsea and subsequently extended his deal for one more season.
Coach Luciano Spalletti has reportedly been hugely impressed by Szczesny and wants to keep hold of the Poland international but may struggle to meet Arsenal’s asking price.
The Gunners wanted to sell Szczesny last summer for €18 million, a price that was beyond Roma who ultimately opted to renew his loan instead.
The report also claims that Wenger is now reluctant to sell Szczesny as he now views him as the perfect replacement for Petr Cech who turns 35 next year.
Cech has actually come in for some rare criticism this season, he is yet to save a penalty since joining the club and has now gone eight games without a clean sheet – his longest stretch in 13 Premier League seasons.
Wenger also has David Ospina, who has been the club’s Champions League and FA Cup goalkeeper this season, but his future is uncertain with the Colombia international believed to want more first-team football.
Providing further competition for the No.1 spot is Emiliano Martinez, who signed a new long-term deal in November and who Wenger has described as the “future goalkeeper at this club”.
The report claims that Szczesny’s price may have actually risen from last summer, due to his performances this season, which suggests that once again Roma may struggle to sign him.
