Arsenal defensive midfield target issues come and get me plea

Earlier this summer we were linked with a move for Southampton’s Victor Wanyama, but the Kenyan insisted he was happy with the south coast club, as reported by the Mirror.

Things look to have changed drastically in recent weeks however, with the former Celtic star apparently demanding an exit from St Mary’s (via the BBC).

We are badly in need of reinforcements in defensive midfield, with Francis Coquelin currently our only viable option. Wanyama certainly fits the bill of the powerful, dominant, tough tackling midfielder we’ve been missing, and could be an excellent option to have this season.

Saints manager Ronald Koeman claims the 24-year-old isn’t for sale (via the BBC), but he didn’t feature for the club against Norwich – with Koeman claiming he wasn’t mentally ready – and at the right price you’d expect the Dutchman’s words to be revealed as nothing but bluster.

Wanyama may not be the ball-playing midfielder Arsene Wenger is so used to fielding, but that may not necessarily be a bad thing. We are often criticised for our lack of power in midfield, and the African star would go a long way towards remedying that.

He would offer us something different in midfield, but with Coquelin in such good form he may have to settle for a spot on the bench to start with. The lure of Champions League football may be enough to convince him however, so we should at least test the waters.

The midfielder may not necessarily have had us in mind when he requested a transfer, but he may have given us a come and get me plea all the same.
