French defender Djibril Sidibe has revealed why he turned down a move to Arsenal this summer. The 24-year-old opted for Monaco over The Gunners because he believed he would be given more first team opportunities at the French club (via Squawka).
It was a strange transfer. Djibril Sidibe looked set to sign for Monaco before reports emerged that Arsenal had made an eleventh hour bid for the defender who desired a move to the Emirates. A few days later and Sidibe was holding a Monaco shirt aloft for the world’s press.
The Frenchman is a versatile defender who can play across the back four and Sidibe has revealed to France Football why he will be lining up for Monaco next season instead of at the Emirates.
“Monaco is one of the great French clubs.” Sidibe said. “From a football perspective, their ambitions in Europe and participation in the Champions League are very interesting.
“With Arsenal, I thought about it for a long time, but in terms of playing time, I knew I would be very limited, between 15 and 20 matches.
“That was not formally said to me, but I did their line-up in my head because there is quite strong competition for places.”
The new Monaco man did not however rule a move to England in the future. “So I said to myself,” Sidibe told the interviewer, “do another year or two in Ligue 1, take as much from it as possible, and why not, then play there [in England].”
So Djibril Sidibe has not ruled out a move to Arsenal or English football in the future but not right now. It’s a shame we won’t be seeing the youngster at the Emirates anytime soon but perhaps it is for the best that he continues his development in France.
