Arsenal have missed out on signing Ryiad Mahrez after Leicester City confirmed the Algerian international has agreed a new four year contract with the club – ending any speculation he could move elsewhere this summer.
The Gunners have courted the 2015/16 Player of the Year all summer and were seemingly closing in on the star, but just like many other transfer sagas this summer – it has come to nothing.
Mahrez’s teammate Jamie Vardy also appeared to be close to joining Arsene Wenger’s men this summer with Arsenal happy to meet his £20million buyout clause, however the deal never eventuated and it resulted in the England international securing a very lucrative new deal with the Foxes. It appears Mahrez’s camp have achieved the same outcome.
Leicester confirmed the deal on their Twitter page:
Mahrez seemed an unlikely signing on the face of it for Arsenal considering other clubs such as Barcelona had already turned his head this summer. The Algerian has probably taken one look at how shambolic the Gunners defence is and opted to play in front of Robert Huth and Wes Morgan again this season. Now that’s saying something!
