Arsenal could complete the signing of Shkodran Mustafi from Valencia “in the coming hours”, according to Spanish newspaper Marca. The defender has been linked with a move to the Emirates for weeks in one of the most protracted transfer stories of the summer so far (via Sport Witness).
Anyone who watched Arsenal’s 4-3 defeat to Liverpool could see the need for defensive reinforcements and the club could be getting some soon. Spanish newspaper Marca has claimed that the club could sign Valencia centre back Shkodran Mustafi very soon.
The newspaper’s source is Roberto Soriano, a Villarreal midfielder and friend of Mustafi. The German pair are friends and played together at Sampdoria.
“I was hoping Mustafi would help me adapt to life in Spain.” The midfielder told Marca. “But now he goes.”
The news will go down well with Arsenal fans who are eager for reinforcements following that opening day defeat to Liverpool. The club have lost senior defenders Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista to injury and Laurent Koscielny has only recently returned to training following France’s exploits in the European Championships.
Mustafi’s potential move to Arsenal has long been discussed but this news brings it a little bit closer to fruition. The Marca article also claims that a fee of €33 million would be enough to persuade Valencia into the move. Let’s hope Wenger and The Gunners board put up the money and get this deal over the line.
