Arsenal have reportedly made an enquiry over the availability of Barcelona’s defender Jeremy Mathieu, according to French media outlet SFR Sport.
The Frenchman is thought to have delayed advanced talks with Besiktas, with Arsenal now pouncing as they look for reinforcements after the recent injuries to Per Mertesacker and Gabriel.
The Gunners are closing in on Shkodran Mustafi and it appears Arsene Wenger is taking further action to bring in another established centre-back in Mathieu before the transfer window ends.
The 32-year-old has a contract with Barcelona until 2018 and remains interested in a move to Turkey, however there appears to be an opening to engage in talks with no formal arrangement agreed with the Istanbul outfit.
The versatile defender, who can play at left-back, has made 49 starts in the two seasons at the club. Mathieu has plenty of experience in Spain since arriving at Valencia in 2009 and would be a useful addition considering the shortage of centre-backs at Arsenal.
Not necessarily a world-class addition but could turn out to be an appropriate stop-gap considering the loss of experience from Mertesacker’s injury.
