A new report emerging from Spanish news outlet Marca (via Give Me Sport) claims that Arsenal have made no formal offer for Shkodran Mustafi.
The German defender has been tipped to soon become a Gunner for close to a month, yet it seems Arsene Wenger is hesitant to make an official offer to Mustafi’s Spanish employers Valencia.
The north London club have yet to complete an incoming transfer deal since Rob Holding’s £2m purchase last month and looks unlikely to do so with progress on other summer targets stagnating in typical Gunners fashion.
A string of injuries have plagued Arsene Wenger’s defensive, midfield, and offensive lines from the first team squad. Per Mertesacker suffered a serious knee injury during the preseason which will keep him out until 2017, with Gabriel Paulista recently being ruled out for 6-8 weeks. This has left the Gunners’ back four short in numbers.
Although the Valencia defender could leave La Mestalla for only £25m, and despite the Frenchman insisting that he is willing to splash for new signings, continuous links to Mustafi – and also Mahrez and Lacazette – are not producing results.
Le Prof recently told BBC Radio 5 Live of his concerns for his future with Arsenal: “My contract runs until the end of the season. What I will do after will depend a little bit on how the season goes.”
The Frenchman also spoke openly about his lingering guilt and regret over finishing second after Leicester City, saying: “All the big clubs experienced last season a regret and a feeling of guilt but that would take something away from Leicester, who had an exceptional season,” as reported by the Guardian.
However, Le Prof’s indecisiveness in the transfer market isn’t really helping his cause at Arsenal, especially with rivals Manchester City and United spending big to rebuild their squad.
This Sunday is the official kick-off day for the English Premier League, with the north London giants set to face Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium.
