Arsenal’s pursuit of another star striker is over, claim reports from Spain

Arsenal target Alvaro Morata is set to sign a new contract with Real Madrid according to Spanish newspaper Diario AS, with suggestions the links to the Premier League were used to strengthen the players position in contract negotiations.

The former Juventus man has been a reported target for Arsenal all summer following the player’s return to Madrid after the Italian giants activated his buyback clause. It was claimed the Spanish outfit would sell the forward in order to fund another larger move, perhaps for Paul Pogba, but AS claims that is not the case.

The newspaper insists that Morata is now in line for an improved contract following the interest from Arsenal and Chelsea. AS writer Marco Ruiz claims that “The 23 year-old will sign a new, five-year contract in the next few days and boost his salary to six million Euros.”

This deal will change the initial agreement made between the club and the player before he departed for Juventus. Ruiz goes on to say that Morata “Was expecting to earn 4.5 million Euros. But his agents were holding all the aces in negotiations, presenting two concrete offers from English sides – Chelsea and Arsenal.”

It‘s naive to think that some transfer rumours aren’t started by agents trying to get more money for their clients. This seems to be the case again here and it wouldn’t be the first time this has happened in recent seasons.

Real go into the coming months with a lot of anxiety over court cases so keeping Morata makes sense. The club are awaiting the result of the tribunal involving Karim Benzema as well as the looming FIFA transfer ban. As a result, the decision to keep Morata seems like the right move. Madrid will tie down a young home-grown forward who is one of the most in-demand players on the planet.

For Morata too, the decision certainly has its justifications. He will remain at his boyhood club who have just enjoyed Champions League success. He has played there before but will return to Madrid with a point to prove and more responsibility.

Diaz claims that Morata will receive a full presentation from the club in early August. The search continues for Arsenal…
