Arsenal could benefit from Bayern Munich’s business with second summer signing

Arsene Wenger is seemingly looking to get his business done early this summer, with the Frenchman apparently looking to bring in Bayern Munich’s Medhi Benatia, according to French publication RMC Sport.

The 29-year-old appears to be surplus to requirements at Bayern, with the German giants recently completing the signing of Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels (via Goal). The German centre-back’s arrival has resulted in Benatia being tipped for a summer exit, with Arsenal, Juventus, and his old side Roma all monitoring the situation (via Calcio Mercato).

Injuries have already impacted the Moroccan’s career, with his game time at Bayern being somewhat limited as a result. Hummels’ arrival will only further restrict Benatia’s game time, so it’s hardly surprising that he’s being linked with a move away.

With Laurent Koscielny, Per Mertesacker, Gabriel Paulista, and Calum Chambers currently at Arsenal, you could argue that we’re not badly in need of centre-back reinforcements. Koscielny aside, they’ve all got real shortcomings though, and most Arsenal fans would like to see another top quality centre-back arrive this summer.

It looks like Wenger has already got his first signing through the door, with Granit Xhaka as good as an Arsenal player already (via Sky Sports). If he can continue on this trajectory and keep getting business done early in the transfer window, then the fan fury that has been directed at him recently may subside a little.

While it’s still unclear whether Benatia would even be the right signing for us this summer, it’s also questionable whether he’d even want to make the switch to north London. He’s suggested before that he’d love a return to Roma, with the Serie A side where his heart really lies (via the Express). He may be happier with a move back to Italy rather than the Premier League, so Wenger may need to focus on other targets.

A top quality centre-back would be a welcome boost, but a striker and perhaps a wide forward are arguably more of a priority. With Danny Welbeck’s injury we’re really left with just Olivier Giroud leading the line, and for a team with title aspirations that’s just not acceptable.
