There’s another pretty far-fetched rumour about Alvaro Morata to Arsenal coming from The Sun, with the report suggesting we’re willing to “smash” our wage budget in order to lure the Spaniard to the Emirates.
We were recently linked with a record breaking £51m move for the Spaniard (via IBT) – which everyone pretty much laughed off – and now we’re being tipped to make him our highest paid player with a £155,000 per week offer? Let’s be real here.
Morata is an excellent young striker, and he has the potential to be a top quality forward in the future. At the moment he isn’t worth nearly £51m though, never mind being made the highest paid player at Arsenal. Imagine how Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Özil would feel if Morata arrived as the highest paid player? Unthinkable.
It’s entirely possible that Arsene Wenger is looking at Morata as an option, as we badly need reinforcements up front and due to Real Madrid’s buyback clause (via IBT) Morata’s sale could potentially be out of Juventus’ hands. It’s ridiculous to think that we’d fork out the money being touted though, and although Arsenal fans want Wenger to spend big, if he were to waste a massive chunk on Morata it would be extremely disappointing.
If the 23-year-old were available for a reasonable price then he might not be a bad signing, and although he’s been very average this season, we’ve seen in the past what he’s capable of. He’s arguably not quite at the point we need at the moment though, and we need an instant impact striker rather than a star of the future.
Even if we were willing to spend the kind of money he’d reportedly cost, we’re still apparently facing competition from Chelsea (via The Sun). The reason a £155,000 offer is allegedly on the table is to ward off interest from Chelsea, but getting involved in bidding wars is very unlike Arsene Wenger.

Wenger needs to make some fantastic signings this summer if he wants to appease the fans and get them back on his side, and we’ll need a number of additions if we’re to really challenge for the title next season.
