Southampton’s Victor Wanyama has been linked with an Arsenal switch during several of the last transfer windows, but the Saints are finally ready to cash in on the Kenyan, according to Sky Sports (via the Daily Star).
Wanyama has really impressed since making the switch to the Premier League, and has consequently been coveted by a number of clubs. With the volume of exits Southampton have had to deal with however, they have so far been reluctant to sell Wanyama. Sky Sports claim that this summer they are resigned to losing him though, putting several clubs on alert.
While Wanyama seemed to fit the bill perfectly a few transfer windows ago, now it seems unlikely that we really need him. There are other far better players on Arsene Wenger’s transfer list, who would arguably suit the Arsenal style of play better as well.
We’ve been heavily linked with Granit Xhaka and N’Golo Kante recently (via the Metro), who both seem like they’d be better options if we can get the deals done. Wanyama would definitely provide Arsene Wenger with a different option in midfield, with the 24-year-old potentially bringing real strength and power to the side. Francis Coquelin is currently the only truly tough tackling midfielder we have at Arsenal, but while he’s definitely a real fighter, he’s still relatively light-weight.

The report does suggest that we’re in pole position to sign Wanyama if we want him – with Tottenham and Southampton’s relationship soured due to the Toby Alderweireld business – but is Wenger still keen on the former Celtic midfielder?
