A new striker needs to be our top priority this summer, and Arsene Wenger is apparently looking to get his business done early with a €65m bid for Alvaro Morata, according to Italian publication Corriere dello Sport (via the Express).
Currently plying his trade with Serie A side Juventus, Morata looks very likely to make a move this summer. He enjoyed a fantastic first season with Juve, but having struggled slightly with second season syndrome and falling down the pecking order he may be looking towards the exit. The fact that Real Madrid have a buyback clause (via the Express) means they can bring him back from Italy and immediately sell him on for a profit, and that’s exactly what they are looking to do according to reports from Italy.
While it’s certainly believable that Arsene Wenger is looking at the possibility of bringing Morata to the club, the price tag being touted is absolutely ridiculous. A fee of €65m is the kind of price tag reserved for the very best in the world, and at the moment that’s not Morata. He’s certainly got massive potential, but he’s really struggled for goals this season – scoring a total of 11 goals in all competitions.
We really need a top quality striker this summer, someone who can come straight in and score rather than build for the future. Morata’s performances this season suggest he isn’t quite at that level yet, and there is no chance we should be shelling out over £50m on a player that isn’t quite what we need.

That’s not to say that these rumours are complete rubbish, and we may well still be showing an interest in the Spanish international. It seems incredibly unlikely that we’ll pay anywhere near the €65m being touted though, so if Morata does arrive at Arsenal you’d assume it would be for significantly less.
