We’ve been continually linked with Borussa Monchengladbach’s Granit Xhaka over the last few transfer windows, and reports from German publication Sport1 claim the deal is now all but over the line.

The Swiss international looks set to leave the Bundesliga this summer, with Monchengladbach hoping to earn £34m from his sale (via Sky). Arsene Wenger is sure to be trying to knock the price down, but whatever the fee, the deal is apparently already done.

The report suggests the transfer fee, his wages, and even the agent fees have all been agreed, with all that remains is for the transfer window to finally open.

With a number of midfielders likely to be on their way out this summer – Mikel Arteta, Tomas Rosicky, and Mathieu Flamini all coming to the end of their careers – we are badly in need of reinforcements. Mohamed Elneny has been fantastic since his arrival in January, and hopefully Wenger will get it right once again with Xhaka – if the 23-year-old does end up making a move to the Emirates.

We’ve really fallen short this season, and at a time when we could easily have pushed for the title, we have looked sub-par next to Leicester and even Tottenham. We need an injection of something a little different this summer, and hopefully Wenger has his eye on a couple of top quality players besides Xhaka.

The player himself hasn’t confirmed that a move to Arsenal or even England is on the cards just yet, with his current contract still having quite a few years to run. They say there’s no smoke without fire though, and considering the strength of these rumours there certainly seems to be at least some truth in them.
