Fellow German and World Cup winner Lothar Matthaus has sent a message to Mesut Özil, imploring him to abandon Arsenal and make a switch to Barcelona, as reported by Yahoo! Sports.
Özil has been touted as a possible target for Barcelona, and while it’s hard to see it happening, it’s still a scary prospect. Losing the World Cup winner would be a massive blow, and would be a real step backwards for Arsenal as a club.
Lothar believes he’d be perfect for Barcelona though, and suggests a move to the Catalan giants would be a great move career wise for his countryman.
“It would surely be a gain for him [Özil], since Barcelona simply is the cream of the crop, especially when it comes to attacking strategies,” he said.
“They [Barcelona] seem to look for someone, who can give inspiration there and strengthen the team more from the depth of midfield.
“If next to Rakitic, there was someone like Özil, who collected about 20 goal assists in the Premier League, which of course someone like Ronaldo and Real Madrid already profited from.
“Of course they are already very aware of that in Barcelona, but I’m pretty sure Arsenal won’t let him go.”
He’s right about one thing, we are unlikely to want to let him go. He’s arguably our most important player at this point, and selling him would not only be a sign of weakness, but would infuriate fans and potentially put us on the verge of a riot.
For years we’ve been at a point where we needed to sell to survive, with the debt incurred by the Emirates crippling us financially. We’re out of the mire now though, so we have no need whatsoever to sell our top stars, and should be doing everything we can to keep the likes of Özil at the club.

A move to Barcelona would obviously have its benefits for Özil, and we’re not delusional enough to think that Arsenal are the top of the top and you can’t possibly get any better. Financially and with regards to medals Özil could obviously get a bit more back in La Liga, but he seems really happy at Arsenal and in London, which is hopefully more important to him than another La Liga medal.
