‘Firm’ Mahrez enquiry made following Arsenal’s Southampton disaster

We’ve got arguably our best chance in years to lift the Premier League title this season, with the usual suspects all struggling somewhat this season. Arsene Wenger is apparently looking to bolster the squad ahead of the second half of the season, with a “firm” enquiry made for Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez, according to the Daily Star.

The 24-year-old has been absolutely phenomenal this season, and may well have been the best player in the English top flight. The form of the Algerian, along with Jamie Vardy, is a large part of the reason the Foxes currently sit top of the league at the moment, and why they had scored in every single game before their 1-0 loss against Liverpool on Boxing Day.

The report suggests Manchester United and north London rivals Tottenham are also looking to lure him away from the surprise league leaders, but we’re the first to make an actual enquiry.

Simply enquiring about his availability is unlikely to be enough, as you’d expect Leicester to do all they can do hold onto the French speaking forward. Every player has their price though, and Leicester would find it hard to turn down a massive offer.

It’s hard to tell whether Mahrez really is a player of unbelievable quality or whether he’s just going through a massive purple patch, so forking out a huge amount could prove a mistake in the long run. We’re more than capable of affording the tricky winger though, so perhaps it’s time we took a gamble or two.

Attacking reinforcements would be a massive boost to our title aspirations, and along with a defensive midfielder, a quality winger is something we badly need. With Theo Walcott seeing himself as more of a striker, Alexis Sanchez is the only wide man of unquestionable quality we have at the club. Joel Campbell and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have shown glimpses in the past, but are they really reliable enough for a team looking to challenge for the title?
