Wenger will meet defensive midfielder’s £33m buyout clause

Arsene Wenger has apparently made signing a defensive midfielder his No.1 priority this January, and Sevilla star Grzegorz Krychowiak is his top target, according to The Sun.

The Polish star has a massive £33m release clause, but the manager has reportedly become so desperate that he is willing to splash the cash. This would mean the Frenchman spending £11m more than the £22m it would have cost to sign Krychowiak earlier this year (via The Sun), but it’s not like we can’t afford it.

The 25-year-old has been excellent since his switch from French side Reims, and has long been on our radar. He seems happy at Sevilla, but a switch to Arsenal would unquestionably be hard to turn down.

It was ridiculous for Wenger to leave us with just Francis Coquelin in defensive midfield, as everyone knew Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini were no longer up to the required standard. And the young Frenchman’s injury (via Arsenal.com) has just highlighted out need for back-up in the centre of the field.

Krychowiak is arguably one of the best options we’ve been linked with in defensive midfield, but he also seems likely to be the most expensive. Considering Wenger is most likely looking for a back-up for Coquelin rather than a replacement it seems strange that he’d spend that much, but stranger things have happened.

Regardless of whether it’s Krychowiak or any number of defensive midfielders we’ve been linked with over the last couple of seasons, it’s imperative that we sign one this January, or our title aspirations could suffer.
