Nacho Monreal has repeatedly been linked with a move away from Arsenal ever since his arrival, and in one of the more ridiculous rumours so far this winter he’s being tipped to make the switch back to Spain.
The report comes from notoriously unreliable Spanish outlet Fichajes (via the Metro), who claim the left-back could be on his way to Athletic Bilbao. Even more bizarre is that they suggest Arsene Wenger is ‘happy’ to let him go, and believes the Spaniard is easily replaceable.
Monreal has been one of our most reliable performers this season, and has become a key part of our setup. He struggled badly when he first arrived at the club, and incurred the wrath of Arsenal fans with some seriously sub-par performances. He has come on leaps and bounds since we first signed him though, and is now one of the best left-backs in the Premier League.
He has displaced Kieran Gibbs as our starting left-back this season, and he certainly wouldn’t be easy to replace. We should be looking to keep hold of our stars rather than letting them go at the moment, and that includes Monreal.
It’s easy to see why Bilbao want Monreal, as his Basque heritage would make him invaluable to them. We just can’t afford to let him go though, not unless Wenger has a plan to bring in a top quality replacement – and even then it’s questionable.

Hopefully we’re right and the news really is total rubbish, as it would be hugely disappointing were we to lose the veteran defender in January.
