Alex Iwobi has completed his move from Arsenal to Everton for a fee which could rise to up to £40 million (via Arsenal.com).
Arsenal have made a number of signings this transfer window and most Arsenal fans expected at least one key player to leave the club.
Many expected one of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette, or Mesut Ozil to be the man to make way but it seems as if that is not the case.
Alex Iwobi has completed his move to Everton in a deal believed to be worth £40 million should every additional clause be met.
The Gunners have already signed Nicolas Pepe in the same position with youngsters Reiss Nelson, Emile Smith Rowe, and Gabriel Martinelli operating the same area.
Something had to give with that level of competition and it seems as if Iwobi was at the top of the list.
Iwobi has been at the club since the age of eight and went on to make 149 appearances for the Gunners in all competitions over four seasons.
“Alex has made a big contribution here at Arsenal,” head coach Unai Emery said of the deal.
“He worked hard in the academy where he was an example to many young players and has been an important part of our squad. We wish Alex every success in the future.”
It’s a shame to see Alex Iwobi depart. The Nigerian international still has bags of potential but it seems as if Arsenal can’t afford to wait around for him to reach that level. He possesses a lot of qualities which have helped the team down the years but never really held down a first-team spot at the Emirates.
