Reports are circulating that Arsene Wenger is interested in bringing Everton defender John Stones to the club, and is willing to spend big in order to secure his services, as reported by the Mirror.
There’s plenty of reason to be sceptical about this rumour, as it’s incredibly hard to see it actually coming to fruition. Chelsea had a bid of £40m turned down over the summer (via The Guardian), so you would think the Toffees would be expecting at least that from us.
Arsene Wenger isn’t known for opening his chequebook, especially on defenders. We may need to make Jones our record signing if we want to bring him to the Emirates.
On top of that, a central defender really isn’t what we need at the moment, so it’s hard to see Wenger investing big in Stones. We have Laurent Koscielny, Per Mertesacker, Gabriel Paulista, and even Calum Chambers available, and Stones is unlikely to come to Arsenal to sit on the bench. Is he better than Gabriel or Mertesacker? Questionable.
It’s true that our current centre-back pairing is somewhat ageing, but is now the time to be bringing the 21-year-old to the club?
We are badly in need of reinforcements in defensive midfield and up front, and Wenger needs to look at strengthening those positions before bringing a player of Stones’ ilk to Arsenal.

We’d struggle to compete with Chelsea financially for Stones anyway, which makes it all the more unlikely. This one really seems unlikely, but would be an excellent signing, even if he’d come with a hefty price tag.
