Olivier Giroud could once again look towards the Arsenal exit door in January after losing his place in the French national team (via Sport Witness).
While the loss of Alexis Sanchez has looked inevitable, the potential sale of Olivier Giroud is seen as something of an avoidable mistake.
The Frenchman looked close to the exit door in the summer with a concern over first-team football cited as the main reason.
Premier League clubs like West Ham United and Everton were the frontrunners for his signature but Giroud instead elected to stay in North London.
He has shown his importance in cup competitions but with the signing of Alexandre Lacazette, Giroud’s role in the team is largely as a substitute, especially in the Premier League.
The forward’s place in the national team was viewed differently. The 31-year-old has been the French side’s first-choice striker in recent years but the emergence of players like Kylian Mbappe has put that into doubt.
Now, French publication Le Parisien points out that now that Giroud could look to leave Arsenal for a club like Everton in January in an attempt to force his way into the starting lineup for France’s World Cup campaign.
It’s a transfer which does have some merit. It makes sense that Giroud would want to force his way into the squad and he would be an ideal signing for a side like Everton. However, Arsenal probably would not want to sell their backup striker, especially considering the real possibility of losing Alexis Sanchez too.
