Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez has confirmed he is a fan of Lucas Perez, amid speculation he could be set to move to St James’ Park.
Perez is widely expected to leave the club this summer after just one season, having become frustrated with playing a bit-part role.
The forward also revealed his anger at seeing his No.9 shirt handed to Alexandre Lacazette, and has said he feels “cheated” by the club.
A return to Spain had looked to be on the cards, with former side Deportivo reportedly willing to offer a 10-year-deal.
However, Newcastle have also entered the race and Benitez looks to be interested in signing him before the close of the transfer window.
“I like the player because I have good friends in A Coruna,” Benitez said via the Daily Express.
“I know that he did really well. He’s come here and not played in many games, but I like the player.
“We know what we need and will try to do it until the end of the transfer window.
“We are now trying to work in different directions at the time.”
There seems little doubt Perez will leave this summer on a permanent deal, the only question now appears to be where he will end up.
